Status-as-Code Patterns That Scale

Status-as-code only works if the structure stays readable as your system grows.
Many teams start with a flat list of services and quickly hit complexity issues. A better pattern is to model status by audience, service ownership, and dependency level.
Recommended structure
services/: canonical service definitions.pages/public.yaml: customer-facing mappings.pages/internal.yaml: engineering-level mappings.routes/: audience-specific routing rules.alerts/: escalation and notification defaults.
Versioning rules
- Use pull requests for all status config changes.
- Require at least one reviewer from platform/reliability.
- Tag breaking status taxonomy changes in release notes.
Naming conventions
Use names aligned to customer understanding on external pages, and technical identifiers internally.
Example:
- External: "Payments API"
- Internal:
payments-gateway-v2
Anti-patterns
- Mixing incident content and static config in one file.
- Reusing internal component names publicly.
- No changelog for status config updates.
